ACCIDENTAL TOURISTS

A few hours later, Mobius sat in the front seat incognito, wearing a huge pair of dark, wraparound sunglasses (which covered not only his eyes, but also the azure mark between them), a baseball cap, white T-shirt, and too-short nylon athletic pants, all with Parque Nacional Tikal and Mayan symbols on them. The gear was from a roadside fruit stand and tourist shop they had passed on the way to the ruins. Jillian and Diego had gone into the bathroom and brushed their teeth and washed up with paper towels as best they could. Jillian even washed her hair. Then they changed into tourist wear too. Paranoid about being tracked by Menendez’s men, Diego had carefully wrapped his filthy fatigues in Jillian’s old clothes before throwing them in the roadside trashcan.

As they drove, Mobius squeezed myomeal into his mouth from a thin, clear pouch. After he was finished, he put the empty pouch in his hand and made a fist. When he opened it, the baggie was gone, and just a little moisture wetted his palm.

“That’s incredible!” Jillian said. “Where did it go?”

“The material breaks down into water vapor and carbon dioxide when it’s under pressure and heat, but only if there’s nothing inside. The food keeps its molecular structure from breaking down.”

“So no trash?” she said. “Isn’t that amazing, Diego?”

“Yes, it is,” Diego said. He stared intently at Mobius’s hand. Forget about the shirt, he thought. I can make billions on those bags. He couldn’t even imagine what would happen if he could get ahold of the cog. Presuming they survived this supposed Armageddon, the bag’s technology alone would make him the richest man on Earth. Besides, he rationalized, it would help save the environment. His mind raced with possibilities—maybe he could even be with Jillian if he became rich, especially if he launched a revolutionary eco-product. He had no doubt that she, not to mention her family and friends, would never have anything to do with a poor Guatemalan jungle ranger under normal circumstances. But, he thought, if I were the next Steve Jobs …

“You seem to be doing better,” Jillian said to Mobius as she ate some plantains.

“I am,” he said. “But I keep wondering if Kaia and the others got home. The ship was damaged.”

“Kaia was your leader?” Jillian said.

“Yes. She is a pilot from the Discovery Corps, our space program.”

“What would she be doing right now if she were here?”

He breathed deeply. “She’d be figuring out how to get to the top of the temple in Tikal where the time capsule is hidden and get inside without being seen.”

“There are at least a dozen temples at Tikal, and all of them except for Temple IV are off limits to climbing,” Diego said. “I’ve been to the top of IV. There’s nothing up there, no opening or doorway; I know that much.”

Mobius fingered his bracelet nervously. “Hopefully, I will recognize Itzamna’s temple when I see it. From the pictures Piphus found, we all thought
